Media watch: Boston treats UFC the way all cities should

There's no city in the country that's into its baseball team more than Boston. The Red Sox take center stage from March-September and then it's time for the New England Patriots. Between excellent sports-radio stations and powerhouse newspapers, Boston is huge on its sports. If you're without a calendar, it's August, there's roughly 30 games left in the MLB season and the Pats are two weeks away from the season opener. So it wouldn't have surprised anyone if UFC 118 got little coverage this week. Instead, the town's media has embraced the event like no other city in the U.S. has in the past. Both the Boston Herald and Boston Globe have had multiple staffers writing stories since early in the week. And even WEEI, one of the top-five sports-radio stations in the country, has devoted ample time to UFC guests and the event. It's a great step forward for MMA. So if Boston can do it, with all that's going on in town, what was the issue in the past with Portland, San Francisco/Oakland, San Diego, Cincinnati, Columbus, Atlanta and Nashville? During those UFC stops, the promotion was fortunate to get an advance newspaper story on the Friday before the event and most of the sports-radio stations half-assed UFC fighter interviews, if they chose to put someone on at all.The real egg is on the face of the most recent host cities San Diego and the Bay Area. UFC president Dana White flipped out before UFC 117 earlier this month. He exploded on Twitter over a reported run-in that his public relations people had with the San Francisco Chronicle. The paper chose to completely ignore the event. White's diatribe and the Chronicle's decision to pass on the event sparked a spirited discussion on sportsjournalists.com, where most of the participants sided with the newspaper and said MMA was still a fringe sport. The Chronicle's decision and the way the event was covered in San Diego reflect an odd shift for MMA. The West Coast was really where the sport got its initial push, but now it seems like the media outlets are hesitant to take the coverage to the next level. Meanwhile, when the UFC has gone east, cities like Boston and Philadelphia have been all over it. Why is that?  Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, a longtime veteran of the newspaper business, disagrees with newspaper editors who refuse to take MMA seriously and says it's just a matter a time before the policy changes.

UFC 118's Three Stars: Edgar, Couture and Diaz

Taking a look at the best and worst of the UFC's first foray into Boston. No. 1 star -- Frankie Edgar: Few champions have ever had to win two fights to be considered a champion, but that's exactly what Edgar had to do. After beating former lightweight champ B.J. Penn at UFC 112, Edgar was given the task of doing it again at 118. Not only did he respond to the challenge without complaint, he fought better than he did at 112, decisively beating Penn in all five rounds of their bout.  No. 2 star -- Randy Couture: Since his bout with James Toney was billed as boxing vs. MMA, Couture had the job of defending MMA's honor. "Captain America" handled the job deftly, taking down Toney and beating on him before submitting him.  No. 3 star -- Nate Diaz: In his second fight at welterweight, Diaz survived a Marcus Davis barrage early in the fight, added a deformity to Davis' head, and then guillotine choked Davis until he passed out. Though Diaz said he wants to return to lightweight, welterweight seems like a natural home for him. Dishonorable mention -- Kenny Florian: Fighting in front of hometown fans, Florian was incapable of getting an offense going against Gray Maynard. A win here would have given Florian a shot at the lightweight belt. He even had Dana White saying that he choked in the big fights.

UFC 118: Nate Diaz Chokes Out Marcus Davis

by Michael David SmithNate Diaz absolutely brutalized Marcus Davis Saturday night at UFC 118, using his striking to turn Davis's face into a mess in the first two rounds before choking Davis into unconsciousness in the third.

"I feel good," Diaz said afterward. "I think I broke my hand in the second round."

But while Diaz may have suffered a broken bone, it was Davis who really suffered in the fight.

Huerta soaks in more of the brawl spotlight on TMZ

In an odd way, Roger Huerta is proving you don't need the UFC marketing machine to promote yourself to casual and non-MMA fans. The former UFC prospect is only 1-1 since leaving the promotion but has gotten plenty of national attention. The reason? It wasn't exactly part of some grand plan. At 2:15 a.m., Huerta happened to stumble upon what looked like a man hitting a woman outside an Austin bar in Texas. Huerta stepped in to beat the snot out of the unsuspecting dude, who was reported to have been a former University of Texas linebacker. According to TMZ's Harvey Levin, the Huerta fight video was one of the biggest stories of that week on the site. Considering that TMZ is normally dealing with the likes of Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber, for anything concerning an MMA fighter to compete with that mix is pretty impressive. Huerta was invited to appear on TMZ's afternoon webcast and talked about the incident. "I approached the man and said, "You don't do that. You don't hit a woman," said Huerta. "The video doesn't show what happened next, but he said, '[Expletive] you. I'll knock
any [expletive] out I want.' The tape also doesn't show that he swung at me two or
three times right after that." "All you see is me bouncing up and down. He has already swung at me at that
point. Then the guy takes off running. I chased him down and you saw what else
happened ... I can't talk about what exactly happened because it's a legal
matter. If the same thing occurred, I would do it all over again. I have no
regrets."
It's interesting to note that Huerta had to often restrain himself from going into too much detail. There are still plenty of legal hoops to jump through. Huerta says he do it again but you wonder if he'd like to erase the end of the brawl where he apparently got pretty vicious? The appearance actually makes you wonder who's handling his case. It's a little surprising that a lawyer would allow him to speak at all on this sort of platform.  These TMZ videos are unique. There's no real setup. Check out the beginning. It looks like Levin is ready to ask Huerta to beat up a faulty chair.  Quotes via Fightlinker

West, Makovsky, Gomez Advance in Bellator Bantamweight Tournament

by Michael David SmithEd West, Zach Makovsky and Ulysses Gomez all won decisions Thursday night at Bellator 27 to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament.

In the first fight of the televised card, West beat Bryan Goldsby by unanimous decision in a bout that will be remembered mostly for the fact that the fans at home couldn't watch it: For most of the fight the Fox Sports Net broadcast lost its video feed, and viewers saw only a graphic saying "Bellator 27 technical difficulties." The Fox Sports Net audio was still working, but the announcers didn't seem to realize that the viewers at home couldn't see the action, and therefore weren't as descriptive as they should have been. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fedor and M-1 calling out Overeem

It's the fight Strikeforce has wanted to book for a while. Alistair Overeem has called out Fedor Emelianenko but been rebuffed at every turn. He's gone as far as ripping Fedor's management, suggesting it didn't want to put its fighter in harm's way. Well, either Fedor is tired of the talk or M-1 Global realized that the guy many considered the best heavyweight in MMA needs a big win to restore his reputation. Fedor told mixfight.ru that he wanted a rematch against Fabricio Werdum. If that doesn't happen, he'd like Overeem by the end of the year."Absolutely, I would like a rematch with Werdum. But as he was recently operated on , then as soon as this fight is unlikely to happen," said Fedor. "This year, in November/December, I would prefer to meet in a cage with Alistair Overeem." M-1 just sent out a release echoing those wishes.Conversations have been taking place behind closed doors between M-1 Global and Strikeforce for some time and injuries, timing and differences of opinion have been roadblocks to putting Overeem and Emelianenko together. "M-1 Global wants to make this fight happen," says M-1’s Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan. "As a global mixed martial arts company committed to driving the evolution of the sport and showcasing match-ups that the fans deserve to see, we want to make this bout a reality in 2010."There's been doubts in the past whether Fedor was really in full control of his career. Sounds like he is now. "This is an important match for me and something that I personally want to happen," says Fedor. "There have been conversations about putting this match-up together in the past and now is the time to begin making this bout possible."  In late June, Fedor (32-2) lost for the first time in 10 years when he was upset by Werdum. Werdum could be considered Strikeforce's No. 1 heavyweight, but it's Overeem who holds the promotion's heavyweight title belt. We called it shortly after the fight, Showtime and Strikeforce needed to make the best fight possible for Fedor, in his last match under contract. Some said Werdum and Overeem should match up. That was nonsense. The promotion needs to make maximum dollars in what could be Fedor's final fight with the promotion, and the bout even casual fans want to see is Fedor versus Overeem.  While this fight is speculative, Strikeforce did announce Wednesday that K.J. Noons will turn around quickly, move up to 170 pounds and challenge Nick Diaz for his Strikeforce welterweight title on Oct. 9. Diaz has been a floating up to 180 pounds for fights over the last 18 months. Now he gets a chance to avenge his 2007 upset loss against Noons. The cries for a Diaz-Jason "Mayhem" Miller fight fell on deaf ears. That fight might make for some great trash talk, but frankly Miller is better served worrying about the middleweight title mix. A rematch against Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, the new Strikeforce 185 champion, is a natural as well. Miller lost to Jacare in 2008 and the rematch in 2009 was declared a no-contest when Souza suffered a nasty cut because an illegal kick by Mayhem.

Head injuries in sports: Dana White says he's terrified of his kids playing football

Any fighter who watched the HBO "Real Sports" piece on the possible connection between head trauma and concussions to ALS had to shutter with fear. Bernie Goldberg's story indicated that there may be a link between athletes that often get their heads smashed -- football, soccer and boxers -- and the dreaded disease. Referencing the story, WEEI's "Dennis and Callahan" show asked UFC president Dana White about safety issues in mixed martial arts. White launched right into his defense of mixed martial arts and the moves to make it safer. He also added his personal feelings about the safety of football by using his sons as an example.  "Both of my sons, they're 8 and 9, train in mixed martial arts. Not that I want them to be fighters I just think as a dad you should teach your kids how to fight," White told the Boston radio show. "My oldest son, who is 9, is a really good quarterback. He's only lost one game in two years. He plays flag football ... I don't know how he got into football but he likes it. But I'm terrified for this kid to play football."To the average American sports fan that sounds crazy, right? With evidence emerging that ALS cases are popping up at an alarming rate amongst former football players, parents may want to think twice about what sports their kids should play.Listen to the entire interview here. Gerry Callahan sounded like he was lukewarm on MMA, but John Dennis was well-informed and even talked about possibly attending UFC 118. We know Dennis is a scrapper. A few years ago he was ready to throwdown on Ryen Russillo, a host from another Boston radio station. Dennis called Russillo's cell phone one day in 2005 and left one of the best phone messages (audio - NSFW) we've ever heard. Russillo now does middays for ESPNRadio nationally based out of Bristol, Conn., but he must look over his shoulder anytime he visits Boston.

UFC 118: Randy Couture Submits James Toney

by Michael David SmithThe 41-year-old former boxing world champion James Toney made his mixed martial arts debut Saturday night at UFC 118. It did not go well.

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture easily beat Toney by first-round submission, confirming what everyone suspected: In a mixed martial arts match, a good mixed martial artist will beat a past-his-prime boxer.

"This was exactly what I trained to do," Couture said.

Spencer Fisher arrested for trying to pick up his kids from school

UFC fighter Spencer Fisher was arrested in Bettendorf, Iowa, for interfering with an official's duties. What does that mean? Read on: "Spencer went to pick up his daughters from school, and he doubled parked because there were no other parking spaces available," [Fisher's manager Mickey] Dubberly stated in an email to MMAjunkie.com. "The police asked Spencer to move his car, and Spencer stated he would only be a second. The police asked him again to move his car, and Spencer kept proceeding to pick up his daughters from school."We've all been there, Spencer. Picking up my nephew from school requires military precision, and there is always one person who takes the job of running the parking line too seriously. Unfortunately for Fisher, that person was a cop with the power to arrest.Fisher's management group expects that the charges will be dropped, which is good considering Fisher is preparing for a bout with newcomer Kurt Warburton at UFC 120.

Edgar convincingly beats Penn in UFC 118 main event

Frankie "The Answer" Edgar left no questions at UFC 118 in Boston on Saturday night. He defended his lightweight championship belt vs. B.J. Penn, winning a unanimous decision 50-45 on all three judges' cards.Edgar took Penn down immediately in the opening round. Penn would not let Edgar pass his guard and finally rolled out after a minute. Not long after, they were back to the canvas, with Edgar scoring another takedown. When they got back to their feet, Penn had a hard time connecting his strikes, while Edgar finished the round off with a big kick-punch combo. In the second, Edgar again did what few other fighters have been able to do: take Penn down. Edgar didn't hold Penn down for long, but when they returned to their feet, Edgar was the aggressor. He continued to move well and frustrate Penn.  Early in the fight, the crowd at the TD Garden chanted Penn's name, but by the third round they were yelling, "Frankie! Frankie!" He earned their love as he stayed fresh and fast, winning virtually every exchange with Penn. Penn finally seemed to come alive in the fourth round, taking Edgar down to start the round. He didn't hold Edgar down for long, though, and Edgar returned the favor with a takedown of his own, sweeping Penn's leg out from underneath him. Edgar postured up and landed big shots, both with Penn on his back and when they stood back up.  In the final round, Penn again started out with a takedown but lost the advantage when Edgar reversed it. Edgar did not let up, landing elbow after elbow on Penn's face. This fight was a rematch of the duo's UFC 112 title bout in Abu Dhabi. In that bout, Edgar won a razor-close decision. This time, he left no doubt who was the better fighter. Edgar melded tight striking, frustrating movement and excellent wrestling, giving him the exact formula to beat Penn. "I feel like I can walk on water," Edgar said. "I knew he was going to come in tough. I wanted to make that point." Gray Maynard won his bout with Kenny Florian earlier in the evening, earning him a shot at Edgar's belt. The interesting wrinkle is that Maynard is the one fighter who has beaten Edgar. Maynard took a unanimous decision from Edgar in May of 2008, and he has a similar style to Penn. After trash-talking before the fight, Penn was gracious in defeat."Frankie fought a great fight," Penn said. "He fought me twice. He walked away with the decision twice."Despite this loss, Penn's legacy isn't in trouble. He still is one of the most dominant lightweights ever to fight in the UFC. Edgar just figured out the best way to beat him.

UFC 118 picks, Vegas-style: Who wins the overshadowed title fight?

B.J. Penn is always the star of the show but not this week at UFC 118. The Hawaiian lightweight legend has willingly taken a back seat to James Toney. The boxer's talk and promotional acumen has carried the card. But make no mistake about it, Toney against Randy Couture, from a pure fighting standpoint is a sideshow (Sherdog's pro's picks have it 50-3 for Couture) compared to the UFC lightweight title rematch between champ Frank Edgar and Penn. Penn lost the first matchup via unanimous decision back at UFC 112. In typical Penn fashion, he's tried to drum up some drama and angst heading into the fight but it's just not that easy against Edgar, who is pretty benign with the spoken word. So the issue again for Penn is motivation. Is he fired up? Will he alter his style and work harder for the victory? If not, he'll have two losses in a row and then what motivates him to come back and get better? Yahoo! Ward, Vega and Oleinik move on in Bellator tourneys

Bellator's third season chugged along, making a stop in Kansas City on Thursday night for women's, bantamweight and heavyweight tournament bouts.  Lisa Ward earned a spot in the semifinals of Bellator's women tournament with unanimous decision over Aisling Daly. She won all three round on all three judges cards. Ward took Daly down early in the first round, and controlled the fight throughout the round. Ward used her positioning to rain down punches at every opportunity. This pattern continued throughout the rest of the fight, with Ward using her wrestling skills to control Daly's every move.  With that win, Ward joins Megumi Fujii, Zoila Frausto and Jessica Aguilar in the semifinals of the Bellator tournament.  Vega takes out Tims Jose Vega moved on in the Bellator bantameight tournament with a unanimous decision win over Danny Tims, with the judges seeing it 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 for Vega. Their fight featured non-stop action. Tims knocked Vega down early in the first round, but couldn't keep Vega down. Vega reversed position, and controlled and inflicted damage on Tims. Any time Tims looked like he could gain an advantage, Vega would use his wrestling to take it away.Vega is the first fighter to make the Bellator bantamweight semifinals. Oleinik survives bloody battle Alexey Oleinik took the final spot in the heavyweight tournament with a split decision win over Mike Hayes. Oleinik took the bloody decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.Oleinik spent much of the fight on his back, but controlled Hayes' wrists and caused damage from the bottom. However, he wasn't able to finish off Hayes. This task became more difficult after Hayes sustained a cut on his eyelid in the third round.  Oleinik will likely face Neil Grove in the semifinals, while Cole Konrad will fight Damian Grabowski. In a non-tournament bout, Steve Carl somehow lasted a through a tight Tyler Stinson triangle choke to win by a technical submission. After getting out of triangle, Carl sunk in a guillotine that choke Stinson unconscious at 2:30 of the first round. This bout was non-tournament, but Carl likely earned himself a spot in Bellator's next welterweight tournament with the win.

UFC 118: Nik Lentz Gets Ugly Win Over Andre Winner

by Michael David SmithThe first televised fight of Saturday night's UFC 118 card was not a particularly entertaining one, as Nik Lentz beat Andre Winner in a dull unanimous decision that left the fans booing.

The first round was a positional battle, with Lentz trying to take Winner down and Winner trying to keep the fight standing. In general Lentz was in control, either on the ground or clinching against the cage, although the best strikes were landed by Winner, including a couple of hard punches near the end of the round that might have been enough to win the round on the judges' scorecards.

After getting out of triangle, Carl sunk in a guillotine that choke Stinson unconscious at 2:30 of the first round. This bout was non-tournament, but Carl likely earned himself a spot in Bellator's next welterweight tournament with the win.

Joe Warren Stuns Joe Soto in Brilliant Bellator Title Fight

by Michael David SmithIn a classic fight for the Bellator bantamweight title, Joe Warren was beaten senseless for five minutes in the first round against Joe Soto, only to storm back and knock Soto out just 33 seconds into the second round.

It was one of the fights of the year, and a fight that showed that Warren, a world-class wrestler, also has an incredible chin and powerful striking.

"I had a bad first round," Warren said afterward. "I took a deep breath, got my focus back and pushed hard. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Unlike Toney, Hunt is acting like a real fighter

Mark Hunt's back is against the wall. A veteran of kickboxing, he's a big fan favorite in Japanese MMA circles. But because he hasn't worked on his ground game, his one-dimensional style has led to a rough run lately in MMA. Hunt has lost five straight and hasn't won since 2006 yet he's making his UFC debut in September at UFC 119. Why? Dana White said Hunt's inclusion was part of the PRIDE purchase back in 2007. Good news for White is that Hunt isn't just going to take the money and run. He told Sherdog back in July that he felt like he'd wasted much of his career and hadn't taken his conditioning seriously. By the looks of the picture on the left Hunt (in the middle) has been working his butt off. He's routinely fought at around 290 pounds. Hunt is also down at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fl., one of the better grappling/jiu-jitsu gyms in the country. No one's saying James Toney could've beaten Randy Couture if he'd worked a little harder before UFC 118. But he could've at least given himself a shot to stay off the deck longer than 11 seconds had he not come in at a career-high 237 pounds. Clearly, Hunt has no interest in a producing a Toney-like performance.Former UFC fighter Jeff Monson is also in the photo (on the left). He looks a bit slimmer. Monson has been talking with Strikeforce about fighting for the promotion in October down at 205 pounds.  Tip via Fightlinker

Dana White sits down with Mike Tyson to talk UFC 118

You think you're a big fight fan? You might get smoked in a conversation with Mike Tyson. The former heavyweight boxing champ loves his sport and is quickly becoming a huge fan of mixed martial arts. For him, the Randy Couture-James Toney fight is right up his alley. Tyson visited the Las Vegas office of UFC president Dana White to talk some boxing. When the conversation turned to James Toney, Tyson got pretty animated (2:13 mark)."I want to see this fight. Toney's a crazy guy," said Tyson. "He's a really dark, kinda crazy guy."If Toney wins at UFC 118, Tyson was interested to see if the UFC would book Brock Lesnar against the boxing great. Tyson follows the sport pretty closely. Last month, he told ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas that his favorite fighter is Fedor Emelianenko. He also has a lot of admiration for Lesnar, after the first round beating he took against Shane Carwin at UFC 116.  This is quite a coup for White and his videographer Eliot. Tyson is pretty picky when it comes to allowing photographs and videos.

Boxers like Arreola worried about Toney hurting the sport's rep

The mixed martial arts world is salivating over seeing James Toney enter the Octagon this weekend at UFC 118. Finally a boxer has backed up his smack talk about MMA and putting his skills on the line against Randy Couture. Why are fans excited? Because most of them expect Toney to get destroyed and potentially embarrassed. That possibility has many boxers worried.  "Of course, I got his back regardless. But I kind of feel like it's kind of disrespectful man," said heavyweight boxing contender Chris Arreola. "Let's just say he doesn't succeed, and (then) every MMA person is going to be like 'see, he couldn't cut it.' Every guy who loves MMA, they're going to be saying that boxing ain't nothing compared to MMA."Boxers Victor Ortiz, Shane Mosley, Ricardo Mayorga and promoter Gary Shaw are featured in the video from FightHubtv.com. They don't sound too confident in Toney's chances. David Haye and Bernard Hopkins have the same worries as well.  Much like Toney's trainer Dan Goossen, Arreola is annoyed that Randy Couture won't be reciprocating and entering a boxing ring. "Let's
do the same, why don't you bring Brock Lesnar in the boxing ring with
myself or any of the klitschko brothers? Bring Brock Lesnar into boxing,
let's see what happens to him," said Arreola. "He'll get knocked the
[expletive] out. It's two different beasts."It's that thinking, and it is accurate, that makes the whole "boxing versus MMA" promotional angle a bit of a farce. But as most of the boxing people tracked down by Marcos Villegas said, you never know what can happen with the four-ounce gloves.

Diaz vs. Noons on for Strikeforce in San Jose in October

Strikeforce confirmed Wednesday that Nick Diaz will return to the cage on Oct. 9 in San Jose to defend his Strikeforce welterweight title against an old foe, K.J. Noons. They will headline a card that will also feature a title scrap between Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen, and a bout between American Kickboxing Academy standout Luke Rockhold and Matt Lindland. The Diaz vs. Noons matchup is puzzling. Though the two have bad blood, started in their Elite XC days, Noons is a lightweight. He beat Jorge Gurgel at lightweight last weekend, was Elite XC's lightweight champ, and has never fought at welterweight for Strikeforce. Of course, Strikeforce gave Brett Rogers a title shot after he lost to Fedor Emelianenko, so logic may not be its first course of action in matchmaking. That doesn't mean that there isn't plenty to get excited about on this card. Coenen will be fighting for the first time since she was TKOed by Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, and Kaufman offers an interesting matchup. Rockhold is an exciting young fighter, and Lindland will be a good test. Even the Diaz/Noons bout has potential if Noons can add to his size between now and Oct. 9.

UFC 118 blowout: Couture takes Toney to MMA school

It was even worse than we thought. James Toney called out mixed martial arts and begged for a fight, but what he showed in the Octagon could barely be called a fight. The out-of-shape boxing legend came out with his left hand at his side and was very stationary. He was a sitting duck for UFC veteran and Olympic-level wrestler Randy Couture, who scored a takedown just 11 seconds into the fight. Toney was helpless on the mat, where Couture moved to a dominant mount position and eventually slapped on an arm-triangle choke to finish the fight in just over three minutes. "I think, in reality, if he's only been training nine months, it's a real short order to pick up everything," said Couture (19-10). "I give real credit to James. He took the risk. All us MMA guys love boxing. Hopefully there's a whole bunch of boxers who will love MMA."By the reaction of the fans at the TD Garden in Boston, MMA diehards don't like boxers. As Couture was mauling Toney on the canvas, a chant of "UFC, UFC" filled the arena.  It was a pretty embarrassing display by Toney. It was almost as if he didn't drill at all  on what to do if he was taken down. Frankly, the weigh-in was a sign of things to come when Toney weigh-in a career-high 237 pounds. He was nearly 20 pounds lighter for his last boxing match in Sept. of 2009. Couture did whatever he wanted from the top and it was clear Toney hadn't learned any technique to try and extricate himself from the position. According to Compustrike, Couture landed 38 strikes to just six for Toney.Couture, speaking during the postfight interview with UFC color analyst Joe Rogan, said he saw this coming. "No surprises. This is exactly what we trained to do. I worked on that arm triangle for over a year."That's when Couture's grappling coach, Neil Melanson, walked over to his fighter and gave him a black belt suggesting that he'd just earned it.Toney was gracious in defeat and surprisingly said that he wasn't done with MMA."He just caught me. He caught me sleeping. I'll be back. I ain't gonna quit," said Toney, as he was booed by the Boston faithful. "My ground game's alright. He fought a great fight. Randy Couture’s a great fighter."Toney was a great boxer, piling up 72 wins against just six losses, but he's far from his prime. It's next to impossible for a boxer to cross over to MMA without at least a few years of training in all elements of the sport. And that probably only applies for a guy still in his boxing prime.

Warren stages huge comeback to win Bellator featherweight title

Just when you thought Anderson Silva had a lock on the MMA comeback of the year for his win over Chael Sonnen, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with an unbelievable comeback.  Returning Bellator champ Joe Soto dominated Warren in the first round, landing punch after punch. After all the shots that Warren took, there was no good reason for Warren to be standing. Soto taunted his Warren, moving his hands away from his face. Warren, a former world champion wrestler, couldn't get Soto to the ground. Warren tried for a spinning back kick, but after he slipped, Soto shook his finger at Warren. The tide changed in the second round, with Warren knocking Soto down with a big righ, following up with unanswered ground and pound, and then when they returned to their feet, Warren finished the fight off with a huge knee. The fight was stopped at 0:38 of the second round. The fight changed so quickly that Soto asked his corner, "What happened?"  "It was all about refocusing. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet," Warren said.Bantamweight tournament semifinalists set Ed West moved onto the semifinals of Bellator's bantamweight tournament with a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision over Bryan Goldsby. West kept the fight moving, attacking Goldsby's legs early in the fight. West was able to maneuver Goldsby into several submissions throughout the fight, but couldn't finish on any of them. Zach Makovsky won a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges cards, over Nick Mamalis. Makovsky outgrappled Mamalis, controlling him throughout the bout. "I expected an all-around war. After I won the first round, I realized how I could control the fight from on top," Makovsky said after the fight.Ulysses Gomez claimed the final bantamweight tournament spot with a split decision over Travis Reddinger. Gomez survived a late arm bar attempt from Reddinger to win the fight.  Jose Vega, West, Mavovsky and Gomez are the bantamweight semifinalists.

Some of Boston's old guard media not impressed by MMA

MMA isn't for everyone. We know that. Too often when folks from the 50-plus demographic speak about the sport they complain about the violence and the blood. So it cames as no shocker that there was complaining from veteran writers like Bob Ryan and Dan Shaugnessy. But they took a different stance both pointing out that they didn't see what all the excitement was about."In all honesty, I’m just telling the truth. The biggest revelation I got from
spending that evening at the Garden was how astonishingly BOOOOORRING this thing
is," Ryan said CSN's New England’s "Sports Tonight". "It is the most overrated … I do not remotely understand the appeal. There
isn’t enough blood, there isn’t enough action."Ryan said the first fight on the pay-per-view between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz was solid but he didn't enjoy the ground work in the later fights."The fans don’t like the wrestling," said Ryan, who is now an expert after taking in one live MMA card.Ryan also knows how knowledgeable each of the 15,000-plus in attendance were. "There are a sophisticated few martial arts experts who appreciate
when there is a well-executed martial arts move to create a submission, yes,
that is not the majority, it’s a small minority," said Ryan. Apparently, Ryan spoke with lots of fans to find out what they enjoy. "The people want to see boxing,
slugging, and they want to see when a guy gets down his face punched, that’s
what gets them excited. It is the most boring nonsense," said Ryan. "Most of the fights in the
early, and granted it was described to me as batting practice, the early bouts,
are guys in wrestling matches in which they were bad collegiate wrestling with
nothing happening." Who gave Ryan that description? Someone on press row? We'd love to know what MMA media regular says the early fights are "batting practice". This is why shows like CSN's "Sports Tonight" and ESPN's "Around the Horn" are unbearable at times. The panel is made of older media dudes who are speaking for the fans yet most haven't had anything beyond a 10 second conversation with a fan in 10 years.  The crew on the embedded CSN video was mostly pro-MMA. Longtime boxing and NFL scribe Ron Borges has more than given MMA a fair shake. He's the "expert" on this panel. Sadly, you can't count on one hand the number of boxing writers who've really embraced MMA. Check out the lead host Mike Felger, he describes the Davis-Diaz fight as sort of gruesome and then says he loved it!Quotes via Fight Opinion

It wasn't a great night for Bobby Lashley. Once again, he looked one-dimensional in his fight against Chad Griggs. He suffered a nasty cut under his left eye that didn't exactly motivate him to fight harder. Lashley also gassed out midway into second round. Worst of all, he his first loss in MMA was to a guy no one thought had a chance. After that performance, it will be pretty tough to sell Lashley in a fight against a big name opponent. It even sounded like Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was going to need some convincing. "We'll be talking to Bobby later. You know he's going to have to do some soul searching and really decide what he wants to do," said Coker. "But if he decides to fight, we'll have him back."  The MMA blogosphere reacted strongly to that statement. Was it an overreaction by the MMA pundits? We're not sure. It was a bold statement by Coker about a guy who had just lost his first fight. Lashley, 34, is still a good prospect but clearly has things he needs to work on. That certainly doesn't mean his career is without a future. Especially if we find out that he was dealing with some kind of serious ailment going into or during the fight.  Coker explained his stance on WJFK's MMA Nation radio show (5:25 mark)."Mixed martial arts is sport where sometimes you're going to get hit, you're going to get hurt. It's not like pro wrestling," said Coker. " As he's working his way up he's going to come to a point where he says 'is this something I want to do?' You're working your way up and now you get a real clear picture of what mixed martial arts is and do you want to work through it and continue, or do you want to do something else?"  Coker may have questions about Lashley's dedication but he knows one thing, the Lashley hype machine needs to slow down. "The thing that's not fair for Bobby is he has all these high
expectations from all these people," Coker told host Luke Thomas. "People think he should be right in
there with Fedor. I mean come on, let's be real, he's not at that level
right now."  The PW Torch reported on what forced Lashley to the hospital after the fight.Lashley was said to be "extremely dehydrated" after his fight against Chad
Griggs on the "Showtime: Houston" fight card. At the hospital, Lashley was
treated with multiple IV bags to pump fluids back into his system.Coker said he still believes Lashley would continue his MMA career but was non-committal on a fight against fellow pro wrestler Dave Batista. Coker said on MMA Nation that Lashley had already reached out to Strikeforce and wants to fight immediately.
